Joey and the Gladstone Four move back to San Francisco since his wife will be working as a magician on a cruise ship for six months. The House passed a long-stalled foreign aid package on Saturday that gives funding to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, with a majority of lawmakers backing money for American allies across the globe. The package, which now goes to the Senate, is almost certain to become law. Stephen was part of the cast of Season 1 and Season 2 of Summer House. Still a friend of many cast members (including Danielle Olivera and the Wirkus twins), his Instagram bio says that he's currently an event planner. While we've seen glimpses of Season 6 cast member Andrea Denver in both Seasons 7 and 8 of Summer House, he's no longer around full time.

The house on Broderick Street was out of the media limelight from 1995, when Full House ended, until 2016, when Fuller House started airing. It was always a popular tourist attraction, but once the Netflix reboot hit the screens, even more fans started flocking to see the house – to the despair of the neighbors. Because of the opening credits, where the family is seen driving around San Francisco and then stopping for a picnic, many believed that the house is one of the infamous Painted Ladies, one of the city’s most photographed tourist destinations. Originally built in 1883, the house used on the show is a perfect example of a San Francisco family home — though it’s admittedly on the pricier side. The house was last sold in 2020 for $5.35 million. In real life, you’ll find the Full House house — which also featured in the Netflix revival, Fuller House — at 1709 Broderick Street in San Francisco.

As shown in several episodes (including in his first appearance), he is also shown to be a very talented singer. In the scene in which he is first introduced, Derek says he blends in with his surroundings. Derek reappears in the series finale of Fuller House when Danny and Joey try to find someone to officiate the triple wedding. Rebecca Donaldson "Becky" Katsopolis (portrayed by Lori Loughlin) is a sarcastic, practical, but very loving and well-educated woman who becomes the love interest and later wife of Jesse Katsopolis.

He had featured spots in Glee, Scream Queens, Grandfathered and You, and starred on Big Shot from 2021 to 2022. While only appearing in four episodes (beginning with season three's "Back to School Blues"), Kathy Santoni is mentioned in several episodes by various characters. In the season seven episode "The Apartment," it is revealed that she got married and pregnant at age 16. Kathy shows up to her 20th high school reunion in Fuller House. In the season four finale Kimmy gives birth to their baby girl, Danielle.

That is introduced in the season eight premiere "Comet's Excellent Adventure". Nelson is a teenager who comes from a very wealthy family, and dates D.J. On-and-off for some time (ironically, it is in his first appearance that D.J. breaks up with him; he ends up going on a date with Kimmy three episodes later in "I've Got a Secret"). Not much is revealed about Nelson's background or family, aside from the fact that he is very rich, and often throws and attends big parties on yachts. Though in "Taking the Plunge," he mentions that his cousin, Regina – with whom he sets Joey up on a date – is visiting the United States from England.

Mount Rushmore Presidents, Facts & Controversy

original mount rushmore design

Jefferson’s was dedicated in 1936—with then-president Franklin Roosevelt in attendance—and Lincoln’s was completed a year later. The project, which cost $1 million, was funded primarily by the federal government. According to the National Park Service, the first face to be chiseled was George Washington’s; Borglum first sculpted the head as an egg shape, his features added later. Thomas Jefferson’s image was originally fashioned in the space to the right of Washington, but, within two years, the face was badly cracked. Borglum then started over with Jefferson situated on the left side of Washington. It’s fitting to commemorate the dedication of the National Statuary Hall, which honors America’s greatest heroes while also celebrating the country’s rich history.

Presidents And A Spectacular View: Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Much of the 450,000 tons of rock removed in the process was left in a heap at the base of the memorial. The federal government paid most of the nearly $1 million cost, with much of the remainder coming from private donations. Washington’s head was dedicated in 1930, Jefferson’s in 1936, Lincoln’s in 1937, and Roosevelt’s in 1939.

Present day

He chose the two most famous presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and chose Thomas Jefferson because of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase (which included the land that became South Dakota). Borglum's original design was intended to go down to their waists, but time constraints and funding only provided for their heads. Borglum had used a massive projector at night to cast his image of Confederate leaders onto Stone Mountain; his assistant traced the shape with white paint. But at Mount Rushmore, Borglum mounted a flat-panel protractor on each of the presidents’ heads with a large boom and a plumb bomb dangling from the boom. “His crew took thousands of measurements on the model and then went up to the mountain and translated it times 12 to recreate those measurements on the mountain,” says Bracewell. In red paint, they marked off certain facial features, what needed to be carved and how deep.

This Day in History Video: What Happened on October 4

But Borglum soon began to clash with the Stone Mountain Memorial Association. But Doane Robinson, a historian at the South Dakota State Historical Society, believed the state needed more to entice tourists. In 1924, learning about an attempt to carve the likenesses of Confederate leaders into the side of Stone Mountain in Georgia, Robinson launched a campaign to create South Dakota’s own mountain men.

Wrapped in its own controversy, the construction of the Crazy Horse Memorial, which eclipses Mount Rushmore in size, continues to this day. The memorial has refused government grants and is funded by visitors and private donors. Thomas Jefferson was meant to be to the left of George Washington, but when the crew started carving there, they realized the rock on that side was not well suited.

Despite this, the memorial has become a popular tourist destination, with thousands of visitors posing for photographs with Black Elk’s statue each day. There is no doubt that the Lakota people were not always overjoyed with the Black Elk Memorial. At the end, the memorial, in addition to being a popular tourist destination, pays homage to the great Lakota leader and honors his legacy. The construction of Mount Rushmore National Memorial began on October 4, 1927, and took 14 years to complete. The sculptor of the memorial was Gutzon Borglum, the son of Danish immigrants.

Hall of Records

When Rushmore asked a local man the name of a nearby mountain, he reportedly replied that it never had a name before, but from now on would be known as Rushmore Peak (later Rushmore Mountain or Mount Rushmore). The South Dakota landmark has drawn criticism over the land it occupies, the main sculptor behind it and the legacies of the men it memorializes. The path which led Sculptor John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum to Mount Rushmore began on a homestead near Bear Lake, Idaho, where he was born in March of 1867. His father, James Borglum, had immigrated to this country from Denmark a few years earlier. In the landmark United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians case, the Supreme Court ruled that the U.S. government had improperly taken the Black Hills territory from the Lakota, who were deemed entitled to $17.1 million in damages. But the Lakota declined the compensation and have since advocated for the return of the Black Hills instead.

By the 1920s, South Dakota, now a U.S. state, had became a road-trip destination for Americans in their new horseless carriages. They motored in to see the newly designated Black Hills National Forest and Wind Cave National Park. Governor Peter Norbeck had also built the Needles Highway, a scenic route wending through the iconic granite formations of the Black Hills. How they got there is a complex tale of land grabs, egos, and foiled movie scenes. Consequently, on July 4, 1776, our forefathers promulgated a principle never before successfully asserted, that life, liberty, equality, and pursuit of happiness were the birthrights of all mankind.

Park footer

In the eight decades since the carving was completed, it has never been without controversy. Borglum was still refining those heads when his health began to deteriorate. He died on March 6, 1941, leaving his son, Lincoln, to continue his work. But the mountain had a limited amount of carvable surface—for example, Jefferson’s hand couldn’t be completed due to the quality of the stone—and, worse, funding had run out.

original mount rushmore design

He began to experiment with the "emotional impact of volume." Out of a large block of marble, he fashioned a colossal head of Abraham Lincoln, The work was completed and taken to a shop window in New York. Back in this country, Borglum led a life marked by artistic success, public service, and occasional controversy. His Mares of Diomedes was accepted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He did a large equestrian bronze of General Phil Sheridan which Theodore Roosevelt unveiled in Washington. He also created a memorial to Pickett's Charge on the Gettysburg Battlefield. For Newark, New Jersey, he created the Wars of America memorial and the Seated Lincoln.

But the discovery of gold in the region soon led U.S. prospectors to flock there en masse, and the U.S. government began forcing the Sioux to relinquish their claims on the Black Hills. Because of World War I, work at Stone Mountain did not begin until 1923. Carving was limited to jackhammers and chisels until a visiting Belgian engineer taught Borglum the use of dynamite for precise work. Soldiers in the audience who served with the Confederate leader were moved to tears by the likeness. It’s unlikely that any major changes will be made to this nearly 80-year-old memorial. While some have pushed for Mount Rushmore to be expanded, others have demanded that it to be torn down.

The voyeurism likely began with the Café du Bagne in Paris, which opened in 1885 and had its waiters walk around with balls and chains attached to their ankles. At the turn of the century, similar restaurants popped up throughout the United States; a few years prior to the Jail Café, a prison-themed coffee shop, in which patrons scratched their names on the walls, celebrated its grand opening. Of Los Angeles’ numerous restaurant themes, prison was one of the most popular—and one of the most misrepresented. The Jail Café was part of a larger trend in which mostly white customers glorified a system that, in the U.S., disproportionately targeted and incarcerated black men. As we created my abundance board, which Tansy describes as being like a "personal algorithm", she told me to select images and words from heaps of magazines that called to me intuitively. She explained that some people will be very specific with their desires, like selecting a photo of the exact car they want, or the perfect house, but that isn't how manifestation works. There needs to be an element of trust in the universe giving them what they attract. "It's so important to bring in your values with manifestation because sometimes we can get really confused with what we want, with social media especially," she told me.

Tansy started practising manifestation in 2018 after going through a difficult period in her life. She eventually quit her job in events management and started teaching others how to do it successfully. While some people focus their manifestation practices on being grateful to the universe, Tansy Jane Dowman believes we need to get "out of our heads, into our bodies", connect with nature and find our true selves before we can practice it successfully. It also features requirements for consistent signage, a single set of rules for operators on private land and an "appeals charter". Private car parks are accused of "confusing drivers" after introducing a new code of conduct - despite "doing all they can" to prevent an official government version.

The next Bank of England decision on rates comes on 9 May - and pretty much no one is expecting a cut from the 16-year high of 5.25% at that stage. "You're spending time, energy and money doing something that doesn't have a lot of evidence behind it. We found it does make you feel good but you don't need to pay thousands to do it." While all the manifestation believers I spoke to said there was no downside to the practice, a researcher has been looking into whether it really does pay off.

A small plot of land, originally a botanical garden modeled after the Chelsea Botanical Garden in London, England, is now home to the Pirates’ House, a Savannah restaurant and one of the oldest standing buildings in Georgia. The money story of the week has been mortgage rates - with a host of major lenders announcing hikes amid fears the Bank of England may delay interest rate cuts. Guests to the Pirates’ House are seated in various rooms in the building. Apparently, the place started out as an inn and tavern, but soon pirates were frequenting the establishment.

Use our calculator to find out how much, enjoy our weekend reads and leave a comment below, and we'll be back with all the latest personal finance and consumer news on Monday. While its history and architecture are undeniably captivating, The Pirate’s House is equally renowned for its culinary offerings. The menu is a delightful blend of traditional Southern dishes and seafood specialties. Favorites include the honey pecan fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and the legendary she-crab soup. The establishment also offers a vast selection of rums, paying homage to its pirate legacy. The restaurant boasts 15 dining rooms, each with its unique character and theme.

"I've become very clear on what I want and the amount of money I need and literally it can be within 24 hours that I get a phone call for a job and it's almost identical to what I asked for money-wise." My journey into the world of manifestation (the belief that you can attract success in your life through positive affirmations and visualisation) has taken me places I never thought I'd go. The change, announced by the chancellor in his March budget, impacts around 27 million payroll employees across the UK - starting this pay day. We’d heard that a pirate would give you a tour of the restaurant if you asked, so after lunch, we tracked down our pirate. Tales of buried treasures, secret tunnels leading to the Savannah River, and ghostly apparitions have only added to its allure over the centuries. The very beams and bricks of the building seem to whisper secrets of swashbuckling adventures, clandestine meetings, and tales of the high seas. The Herb House was built on a ten-acre plot of land located on the east side of James Oglethorpe's original plan of the city of Savannah. The plot of land was assigned to become a botanical garden that modeled the Chelsea Botanical Garden in London, England.

The Captain’s Room, adorned with maritime artifacts, offers a cozy setting, while the Treasure Room, with its display of rare coins and treasures, piques the curiosity of diners. Situated a scant block from the Savannah River, the inn became a rendezvous for pirates and visiting sailors from the Seven Seas. The building remained intact through the centuries, but lost its spark and had fallen into disuse after World War II.

From architectural marvels and historic landmarks to culinary delights and serene parks, Savannah offers a diverse range of attractions that cater to every kind of traveler. Waiters dressed as convicts sat them at tables located in these cells, locked the door, and served them a choice of chicken, steak, or lobster. That Los Angeles served as the site of such a strange nightclub should be no surprise. The city, which now teems with stores built in the shape of giant donuts, submarines, hotdogs, and more, was the birthplace of the modern theme restaurant. In the early 20th century, according to historian Charles Perry, set designers looking for paying gigs often found work turning ordinary restaurants into theatrical establishments. The cinematic nature of venues like the Pirate’s Den also fit with the Hollywood mold—as movies took off, tourists came to the growing city expecting wild entertainment.

Los Angeles, California

The property was acquired by the Savannah Gas Company in 1945 and the dilapidated building was slated for demolition. It was saved by Mrs. Mary Hillyer, wife of the president of the company Mr. Hansell Hillyer. Mary, along with some other local ladies, took it upon themselves to restore General Oglethorpe’s vision of Savannah. This meant that our beloved Pirates’ House received it’s first restoration treatment under the magic wand of Mrs. Hillyer.

Rishi Sunak has hailed the arrival of pay day with a reminder his government's additional National Insurance tax cut kicks in this month for the first time. Swap rates - which dictate how much it costs to lend money - have risen on the back of higher than expected US inflation data, and concerns this could delay interest rate cuts there. One of the most elaborate was the Jail Café on Sunset Boulevard, which was designed to imitate a prison. Customers ducked down a long hallway until they reached the main dining area—a large room containing rows of mock prison cells.

The History of The Pirates’ House

"The way I manifest is not to focus on material wealth or gain. I would ask my clients what an abundant life means to them in terms of feelings, experiences, connections, people and places," she explained. He famously wrote himself a $10m cheque for "acting services rendered" and dated it years in advance. Then in 1995, he was told he was going to make the exact amount for filming Dumb and Dumber. The 43-year-old also believes he manifested his husband Fiongal after being diagnosed with cancer. While going through treatment and dating "a lot" of people, he decided to take matters into his own hands, or rather his own head, and started visualising his perfect partner.

Supposedly, a tunnel connected the inn and tavern to the river where unsuspecting drunkards were carried off to their new life as crew members of a ship. Amidst the cobblestone streets of Savannah’s historic district, there’s a place where legends of swashbuckling pirates come to life – The Pirates’ House. Dating back to 1753, The Pirates’ House isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a captivating journey into the folklore of the high seas and a culinary treasure trove for those seeking an authentic taste of the South.

This includes the scrapping of Class 2 contributions, as well as a reduction of the rate of Class 4 contributions from 9% to 6% for the £12,570 to £50,270 earnings bracket. In short, this is because NI cuts are more than offset by other tax rises. At last month's budget, the chancellor announced NI will be cut by a further 2p - so some workers will pay 8% of their earnings instead of the 12% if was before autumn. That comes after a government-backed code of conduct was withdrawn in June 2022, after a legal challenges by parking companies. The code of practice launched by two industry bodies - British Parking Association and the International Parking Community - includes a ten-minute grace period for motorists to leave a car park after the parking period they paid for ends.

Her charity has also been affected by those increased costs, with the electricity bill rising to £10,000 a month at their highest, to fund things like heated pools for alligators. The cost of living crisis has also forced owners to give their pets away, she says. She added people who want to get rid of the pets sometimes call zoos for help, which then call on her charity. In a video tour of the house, a sculpture of Captain Tom with his walking frame can be seen in the hallway, while a photo of the fundraising hero being knighted by the Queen is on a wall in the separate coach house building.

Elaborately designed restaurants sprang up in order to capitalize on the frenzy. Since 1753, The Pirate's House has been welcoming visitors to Savannah with a bounty of delicious food and drink and rousing good times. Situated a scant block from the Savannah River, The Pirate's House first opened as an inn for seafarers, and fast became a rendezvous for blood-thirsty pirates and sailors from the Seven Seas. Savannah’s Famous Pirates’ House is located on one of the most historic spots in Georgia. It is here that Trustee’s Garden, the first public agricultural experimental garden in America, was located. Around 1753, when Georgia had become firmly established and the need for the experimental garden no longer existed, the site was developed as a residential section.

It’s a fun place to sight-see and escape into a fun, mystical land of pirates. The Pirate’s House, with its rich maritime history, is undeniably a crown jewel in Savannah’s historic district. However, the city itself is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be explored.

The garden, which was located beyond the bounds of today's buildings,[4] was dedicated to Oglethorpe's trustees, becoming known as the Trustees' Garden. The modern-day restaurant was established in the early 1950s and welcomes Savannahians and tourists alike to enjoy an extensive southern-inspired seafood menu, served by waitresses in full pirate garb in one of the 15 separate dining rooms. The atmosphere remains true to a pirate’s inn, with maps, helms, flags and skulls hanging on the walls, as well as some of the original dining sets protected in glass cases.

In 1734, a small building was built on the plot of land to house the gardener who worked there. The Pirates’ House isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a captivating chapter in Savannah’s maritime history. It weaves legends of pirates and sailors into its culinary narrative, offering diners a taste of the sea in a setting that pays homage to the city’s seafaring past. In a city known for its historical treasures, The Pirates’ House stands as a maritime gem, inviting visitors to embark on a culinary voyage like no other. Established in 1753, The Pirate’s House is one of the oldest structures in Georgia. Originally built as an inn for sailors, it quickly gained a reputation as a rendezvous for pirates and seafarers.

It's crazy to think that there was really only one mass-market premium card less than a decade ago — The Platinum Card® from American Express. Now, the Platinum card is just one of a half dozen or so premium card offerings from American Express, but there are actually several different versions. Someone who doesn’t want to worry about maximizing travel rewards is a great fit for the Blue Cash Preferred. You don't have to be a serious aviation aficionado to appreciate the special nature of a card made partially from retired Delta 747s.

Josephine House Review Clarksville Austin

Grab some fresh-baked scones for the table, then make the difficult decision between citrus-cured lox and lemon ricotta pancakes. There’s also a small menu of fresh-squeezed juices, just be ready to shell out $10 for a glass of (admittedly, very good) OJ. Josephine House of AustinThe sister restaurant to Austin fine dining institution Jeffrey’s, offering breakfast, lunch, brunch, happy hour, dinner & Monday night steak frites. The Clarksville cottage features a small marble bar for coffee or cocktails, intimate tables in the dining room, shady nooks on our patio and a grassy front lawn for lounging. Serving an eclectic daily menu featuring the best locally sourced products. To defer entirely to the architect’s original vision, however, would mean “making a museum and not a house,” Campbell says.

STUDIO

Rather than tear down any walls, Campbell’s creative solution is to repurpose it as a dining room and build a larger one in the new addition. In 1956, when the still-untamed Hollywood Hills were an experimental architectural lab, the modernist Richard Neutra designed a house there for the painter-and-poet couple Robert Chuey and Josephine Ain Chuey. Built in the International style, the house featured Neutra’s signature emphasis on the Southern California landscape, namely glass walls that let in natural light and framed 360-degree views of the hills and sea. It gave the Chueys space for Robert’s studio practice and their social experiments in psychedelics.

An old-fashioned vibe encapsulated at Josephine House

“I think if I wasn’t woodworking, if I wasn’t doing other creative things, playing music, I would probably miss it a lot more.” Plus, “there’s still a lot of baking in the house,” adds Duff, who shoots his cookbooks here. Duff credits his laid-back attitude to this house, where he and Johnna moved after their wedding — it’s surrounded by nature up a steep, unpaved road off a winding canyon highway — and all the hobbies he’s delved into here. He’s been making toys for their daughter Josephine, 2, and practicing the guitar for his band Foie Grock (a play on “foie gras” and “rock and roll”). Along with the house itself, the developers purchased the more than 200 paintings of Robert Chuey’s estate.

Located in the heart of Madrid, on Calle Santa Ana 15 in Madrid's Rastro neighborhood, this space unites the concepts of a showroom (with pieces of furniture for sale) and a décor studio. It is characterized by its selection and edition of objects and artistic pieces. An earlier interior view reveals how the artist arranged the home's light-filled studio space. Blackberry cobbler with homemade ice cream, peach upside-down cake with ginger ice cream and bourbon sauce, or blueberry tart with sweet corn ice cream ($8 each) are well-deserved after the strenuous exertions of a slow repast. Josephine House is the latest acquisition in the ever-expanding empire of the McGuire Moorman Hospitality Group, which has perfected the art of entertainment dining. Nestled up against the new Jeffrey's and serving only snacks and drinks during the evening hours, it seems like Josephine House's initial concept was as a stylish waiting area for the main attraction next door.

Josephine House

However, since it opened in February, Josephine House has taken on a life of its own. Lunches and late afternoon comestibles at Josephine House stand on their merit. Josephine House, set in a little blue cottage in the charming Clarksville neighborhood just west of downtown Austin, is available for full buyouts that includes both Indoor and outdoor seating on the wraparound patio. The Apartment, located above sister restaurant, Jeffrey’s, is ideal for  intimate daytime parties or meetings with all the Josephine House favorites.

Despite the stunning vistas and storied provenance, however, when the house went on the market for $10.5 million in 2017, there wasn’t a buyer in sight. As the asking price continued to drop, the conservancy gave Naouri and Choi its blessing, and they bought the home as well as the hundreds of paintings in Robert Chuey’s estate last spring. “The size of the house was quite small for the price they were asking,” explains Los Angeles developer Philippe Naouri, who with partner Eric Choi bought the house two years later for the reduced price of $5.75 million. The modest 2,000-square-foot house “didn't match the price point” of the highly coveted 1.5 acres it sat on, Naouri says, tempting prospective buyers to raze the historic house and start fresh with a profitable 20,000-square-foot mansion.

The menu changes daily and generally features healthy foods that belong to the season; the summer menu, for instance, relies heavily on tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and melon, all brightened with fresh herbs and local cheese. Smoked Gulf snapper on a salad of minted watermelon and cucumber ($18) struck the perfect note for a 103-degree day. A puff-pastry savory tart with roasted tomatoes and eggplant ($12) evoked picnics and croquet on grass-covered lawns. Chef Jen Jackson, formerly of Lenoir and Swift's Attic, has taken a few classy old standards and injected new life into them using a modern farm-to-table sensibility.

Cruise Ships Are Still Sailing as Cases Rise and Criticism Mounts The New York Times

[6] These thresholds are subject to change based on the characteristics of the dominant COVID-19 variant or a novel respiratory virus in the United States or elsewhere. They are located on upper decks and include cabins for families, couples and single cabins. Attacking a hospital ship is considered a war crime, but enemy forces have the right to board them for inspections. Seasickness is physical disorientation as a result of conflicting signals received by the brain from different body senses. Our inner ear senses the ship's irregular motion, which our eyes can't see because the floor and walls are stable.

While most people recover, the virus does cause about 900 deaths a year, mostly in adults 65 and older. Summer travel has returned and people are flocking to cruises again, with more than 31.5 million passengers expected to sail in 2023. Additionally, the CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program, implemented in the 1970s, subjects all passenger ships carrying 13 or more people to random, unannounced inspections if they wish to call on ports in the United States. Respirators or well-fitting masks should be readily available and symptomatic passengers and crew should be encouraged to use them if they have to be outside their cabins.

Norovirus Cases Are Rising on Cruises. Here’s How You Can Stay Safe

According to the CDC, each person who is infected with norovirus sheds billions of viral particles. Many of the symptoms last for just two or three days and while it may come on and leave quite quickly in comparison to other viruses, during the time the symptoms are present, it can be extremely uncomfortable. Norovirus is a viral infection that is one of the most common types of gastroenteritis — a condition that causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal upset. Studies have shown that norovirus can continue to spread for two weeks or more after an infected person stops having symptoms of the illness, according to the CDC.

The crew serves with short-term (2 weeks to 2 years) and long-term (min 2 years) contracts. Volunteer crew members occupy both medical (surgeons, dentists, nurses) and general jobs (deckhands, seamen, engineers, machinists, electricians, teachers, cooks, welders, plumbers, agriculturalists. The most severe outbreaks were reported in Brazil, with an alarming surge in newborns with microcephaly. If the mother is infected, the virus may cause microcephaly in newborns. This is a neurodevelopmental disorder - babies are born with an underdeveloped head. In February 2020, the shipowner cruise company Lindblad Expeditions announced the "Premium Purity" program with a shipwide cleaning system based on ACT CleanCoat technology.

The CDC estimates only about 1% of all annual U.S. norovirus cases happen on cruise ships. The numbers are greatest in nursing homes, hospitals, schools and restaurants, which collectively account for about 91% of cases. They ask passengers who feel ill during their cruises to report symptoms to the medical center and keep themselves isolated in their cabins. In some circumstances, additional public health precautions, such as returning to port immediately or delaying the next voyage, may be considered to help ensure the health and safety of onboard travelers or newly arriving travelers. Health authorities say cruise passengers should wash their hands often and leave the area if they see someone get sick.

Since many people do not get tested, experts can only estimate how many norovirus cases occur in the U.S. every year. While the virus can affect people in large groups, we are starting to see bigger clusters of individuals getting sick. Hydration is one of the most important things you can do to help prevent dehydration — the biggest complication of this illness. While this virus tends to be short-lived, treatment is based on symptomatic care. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, cruise passenger volume is estimated to reach 106% of 2019 levels this year, with 31.5 million passengers expected to set sail. Surfaces or objects that are contaminated with norovirus can be cleaned with a high-level disinfectant like bleach, per Ostrosky.

When such symptoms are noticed, passengers should take precautions to prevent intensifying the disorientation. Obviously, the first thing is to go to the ship's infirmary (medical center) and contact the doctor. You should drink plenty of water as dehydration is a side-effect of the illness.

There are passenger testimonials about quarantined ships and how badly guests have been treated by the line. Virus outbreak news speaks of a lack of proper hygiene control, badly trained staff, bad ship management. The whole responsibility goes to the shipowner (cruise line company) and its management. Cruise ships publish daily health and safety instructions to their passengers on how to avoid mosquito bites.

So far, cruise lines have reported 13 separate norovirus outbreaks to the CDC through the six months ending in June. It’s the most number of reported norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships since 2012, when there were 16. Thirteen ships so far this year have reported outbreaks of the highly contagious stomach bug, the most since 2012, according to the U.S.

The UK Health Security Agency recently reported that norovirus cases are approximately 66% higher this season than the five-season average of the same period before COVID-19. While having the symptoms of norovirus can be uncomfortable, they tend to be very short-lived and something that many people recover from in just a few days with over-the-counter medications. Most people get better after a few days, but severe cases may require hospitalization. However, as travel surges this summer, travel-related illnesses are expected to surge, as well. “I think our travel frenzy after COVID is partially fueling this continued spread (of norovirus),” says Ostrosky. ▪ The federal health agency says that the virus, on average, causes 19 to 21 million illnesses in the U.S. each year.

VSP (abbrev "Vessel Sanitation Program") monitors CDC's observations on illness patterns for GI (gastrointestinal) outbreaks on passenger shipping vessels (ferries and cruise ships). When a single case of norovirus appears on a cruise ship, it can quickly become an outbreak affecting hundreds or even thousands of people. This can happen incredibly quickly due to the confined nature of a cruise ship and the frequency of close interactions among passengers and crew. Norovirus, sometimes referred to as the “winter vomiting bug,” is a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

Most recently, a norovirus outbreak in June on the Viking Neptune sickened 110 passengers (over 13% of the ship's guests) and nine crew members with vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps, according to the CDC. The CDC has tracked outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships through its Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) since 1994. It's a very common, highly contagious, ruthlessly efficient and uncomfortably bad virus affecting the stomach and large intestines. Often called "stomach flu" (the med term is "Gastroenteritis") the infection results in massive vomiting and diarrhea. Sickness outbreaks are considered as such if the percentage of infected people is over 3%.

In the following table, you can see all 2019-reported Norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships. It shows the number of sick passengers and crew (with the respective percentage to all), along with the corresponding CDC report pages (if available) as outgoing links. For the agency to report a cruise-ship outbreak, 3% or more of passengers or crew members must report symptoms of gastrointestinal illness, such as vomiting and diarrhea, to the ship's medical staff. During the most recent outbreak, a 14-day cruise aboard the Viking Neptune in June, slightly over 13% of passengers (110 of 838) reported being ill with predominant symptoms of abdominal cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea, according to the CDC.

To do that, they use stronger solvents, like Microbac, chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide. Sick passengers and crew are quarantined in their rooms, typically for at least 2 days. When Norovirus outbreaks can't be contained, cruise lines might also pull the ship out of service for a few days for sanitizing.
